abstracts | The paper concerns effective conductivity of a heterogeneous soil composed of two materials characterized by different hydraulic conductivities. According to the homogenization theory the effective conductivity is obtained from the solution of an elliptic equation for a single representative elementary volume. A numerical algorithm to solve this equation is described. Examples of calculations for periodic media with inclusions of various shapes are presented. Influence of volumetric fraction, arrangement, continuity and conductivity ratio of the two materials on the effective conductivity is investigated. Numerical results are compared with some analytical estimations available in the literature. |

abstracts | The problem of wave-induced stresses and liquefaction in the seabed according to the Biot-type approach is discussed. The first part of the paper deals with critical analysis of approaches presented in recent literature. It is shown that such approaches do not lead to proper description of the process of wave-induced pore-pressure generation and subsequent liquefaction of seabeds. The second part of this paper deals with the generalisation of the Biot-type approach to the case of shear modulus depending on mean effective stress. |

abstracts | The horizontal motion of the system: rigid block-accelerating subsoil is analysed, using the most simple approach. First, the method of analysis is described and illustrated for constant coefficient of friction between the block and subsoil. Then, the changing coefficient of friction is taken into account, and its influence on the motion shown. In the next step of analysis, the influence of horizontal force on permanent relative displacement of the block with respect to subsoil is illustrated for constant and changing coefficients of friction. The method presented in this paper form a basis for critical discussion of the Newmark approach, that is a kind of standard in earthquake geotechnics. |

abstracts | The paper describes the problem of discrete formulation of plane fluid flows in material description. The investigation is confined to chosen cases of stationary potential and vortex motion of an incompressible inviscid fluid within circular domains with perfect boundaries. The paths of fluid particles are obtained by numerical integration of momentum equations within a discrete time space. Brownian type random disturbances are attached to the displacement field obtained by the integration. It has been shown, that the discrete formulation may lead to solutions in which a small distance between two material points may grow to a relatively large value after a finite elapse of time. The last feature of the procedure may be a serious drawback of the discrete formulation in the material variables. |

abstracts | The paper deals with the theoretical investigation of the phenomenon, which consists in generation - by wind - of the movement of water, the bodies of air and of water being separated by a horizontal, plane interface, which is identical with the free surface of water. A set of assumptions defining a physical model of the phenomenon, borrowed from Lock (1951), is introduced, as well as the mathematical description of this model. It reduces to a composite ordinary differential problem, containing two non-linear equations of the third order, which have to satisfy some boundary conditions. A novel method of solution of the differential problem just mentioned is presented in the paper. In the method use is made of exact formulae for coefficients of series representing the solution. The method seems to be competitive with the one given in the paper by Lock (1951). |
