abstracts | In this paper the problem of interaction between a coherent floating ice field and a fixed, rigid, vertically-walled circular cylinder is investigated. The ice cover, of horizontal dimensions significantly larger than the characteristic size of the structure, is assumed to be driven against the cylinder by wind drag forces. The ice is treated as a viscous-plastic material, in which the permissible stress states in the horizontal plane are bound by an elliptic yield curve. By using an associated flow rule, a constitutive law, involving two parameters defining the ice strength in compression and much smaller strength in extension, is derived in order to describe the behaviour of the material. The law predicts distinct responses during yield (occurring at high strain-rates) and during the flow when the yield condition does not apply (at lower strain-rates). The results of numerical calculations performed by a finite difference method illustrate, for chosen ice rheological parameters, the distribution of contact stresses at the ice – structure interface. Two forms of boundary conditions at the cylinder wall, free-slip and no-slip, are considered, and their effects on the horizontal loads sustained by the structure are examined. In addition, the results for the viscous-plastic rheology of ice are compared with those obtained on the assumption of a purely viscous behaviour of ice. |

abstracts | A method of simulating random fields using a moving average is proposed in this paper. Random fields were simulated for different sizes of sub-field and different numbers of cycles of calculations of the moving average. For the fields obtained the covariance function was analyzed. In order to estimate the efficiency of the proposed simulation method of random field based on the method of diagonal covariance matrix was performed. It is shown that two of the simulation methods presented are able to generate a multidimensional random variable with required correlation function. However, the method of diagonal covariance matrix has some limitations caused by the size of the simulated random field, which result from the necessity of converting a relatively large matrix. Using the proposed simulation method it is possible to simulate, in a comparatively quick and simple manner, a random field with a large number of nodes on PC-s. The presented method can be useful in the stochastic analysis of transport phenomena in soil. |

abstracts | The numerical simulations show the potential of a lattice discrete approach to model fracture during brittle materials in different two-dimensional quasi-static processes of loading behaviour. The 2D calculations were carried out for brittle specimens subject to uniaxial compression, uniaxial extension and shear. The effect of the specimen size on the global stress-strain diagram during uniaxial tension was also investigated. The advantages and disadvantages of the model were outlined. |

abstracts | Stress state and stress history of subsoil under the flood embankment was evaluated with CPTU and DMT tests. The CPTU dissipation tests in soft soils under the central part of the embankment and on the upstream and downstream sides were performed. The shape of pore water dissipation curve reflects stress state and stress history. Monotonic decay of water pore pressure was found for normally consolidated soils. Dilatory pore pressure response is typical for overconsolidated soils. Methods for the flow characteristics determination (coefficient of consolidation and hydraulic conductivity) were presented. |

abstracts | The case of linear, two-dimensional long waves on a uniform slope is considered. It is assumed that the fluid is nonviscous and incompressible. In the present paper the description of the long wave proposed by Wilde (Wilde, Chybicki 2004) is based on the fundamental assumption that the vertical material lines of fluid remain vertical during the entire motion. The equations of motion are derived with the help of a variational formulation of the problem. The Lagrangian is the difference between the kinetic and potential energy of the fluid. In the paper a correction followed from dispersion to the results obtained by Shuto is presented. |
