abstractsIn the face of difficulties of a physico-chemical analysis, two semi-empirical methods have been worked out enabling one to calculate the equilibrium freezing point depression, Θ0, as a function of soil water content and physical properties. Method A, based on the approximating power function, takes into account mineral composition, specific surface area and the values of soil consistency limits. Method B, making use of the approximated hyperbolic function, requires only the consistency limits, wp and wl. Verification of the methods has shown that the values for Θ0, estimated at water content, wp, between the interval wp < w < 1.2wl, have an average absolute error equal to 0.13 K (method A) and 0.08 K (method B). The average absolute errors at w between the interval 0.8wp < w < 1.2wl are 0.22 K and 0.32 K for methods A and B respectively.

abstractsA water treatment plant from the Rudawa river was tested in order to investigate temperature influence on the hydraulics of VDR filters. For this filter plant supplied with raw surface water the effect of temperature on head loss in filter media was well documented, but the effect on the turbulent flow through a designed system of orifices proved to be limited. It was found that for the particular plant investigated, peak demands can occur in winter when the water is cold. Concluding, the VDR filters need to be designed for winter conditions but proper operation requires nomograms for the water table fluctuations over the filters as a function of the water demands and temperature. For the bank of data collected from the tested filter plant the operation based on the same maximum flow through a dean filter led to acceptable fluctuations of the water table. These fluctuations would be much higher if the ratio of the maximum to the average flow-rate in the plant was chosen as a constant parameter of operation instead of the value of the flow rate through a recently backwashed filter.

abstractsThe random elasticity theory is applied to the statistically homogeneous soil layer subjected to its own weight. The modulus of elasticity is assumed to be a stochastic process and the uni-axial strain state is considered. The governing elasticity equations are presented in alternative ways, as a first order stochastic differential equation either with a random coefficient or random forcing function and as a second order stochastic differential equation. The solution is obtained by the approximated analytical methods i.e. perturbation procedure and Adomian's decomposition method. First order perturbation method is used to determine the variance function of the solution and second order to find the average displacement. There is no small fluctuation assumption in Adomian's decomposition method. In a framework of this method the analytical expression defining the displacement as a stochastic process is presented. The second order average solution and the variance of displacement are found, although the explicit expression for the variance is found only for the first order solution.

abstractsTo reduce the influence of mining waste on the ground and river water, two cut-offs have been completed in recent years in Poland. A bentonite cement slurry was applied to both cut-offs. The monophase cut-off construction process was possible by application of a sodium salt mix to modify the properties of the slurry. Structural and technological criteria are required to design the bentonite-cement slurry composition. It constitutes a mixture of bentonite slurry (BS), cement slurry (CS) and modifier (M).The paper presents the results of investigations that performed to determine the procedure of designing the bentonite-cement slurry composition for cut-off walls. The relationship between compressive strength Rs and CS/BS ratio of the bentonite-cement slurry specimens has been estimated. The procedure of designing the bentonite-cement slurry composition consists in determining of cement to bentonite slurry ratio, evaluation of bentonite content in the bentonite slurry, and cement in the cement slurry, as well as evaluation of modifier content.

abstractsThe random elasticity theory is applied to statistically homogeneous elastic soil half-plane subjected to gravity. The analysis is performed for the half-space in the plane strain state. Only the elastic modulus is considered to be uncertain and is treated as a two-dimensional random field. On the basis of Green's function approach, the stochastic partial differential equations governing the problem, are converted into stochastic integral equations. Then the perturbation procedure and Adomian's decomposition method are applied. The first one imposes small fluctuation assumptions. A system of input stochastic differential equations with random coefficients is here transformed into a few sets of stochastic differential equations with random forcing terms. There is no small fluctuation assumption in Adomian's decomposition method. This method is essentially the solution of the stochastic Volterra equation by the Neumann series expansion. The methods presented lead to approximated but explicit expressions for the statistical measures of stresses and displacements. Although the numerical calculations were not performed, the approach presented offers the tool which can afford quantitative results to the problem discussed.
