abstractsThis paper presents a method for calculating the water-hammer effect in a hydraulic system with a spring safety valve. A model of the valve including its dynamic functioning is presented. The developed model, enables simulation testing in order to estimate the influence of construction parameters of the spring activated safety valve on pressure changes and on the velocity of fluid flow along the pipe.

abstractsA new mathematical model for prediction of a two-dimensional wave motion in shallow water is presented herein. It can be applied to investigate shoaling, diffraction, refraction, breaking, bottom friction and wave run-up on a beach, as well as mass transport and orbital motion. The model also includes an oblique wave approach to the shore and irregular bottom topography. Such engineering constructions as seawalls, breakwaters and groins are simulated numerically. Simple results of computations, shown in graphic form, indicate possible practical applications of the model.

abstractsA theoretical description of reactive solute transport in a network of stream channels is derived by convoluting unit solutions based on a physical representation of transport and topographical information of the distributions of solute load as well as pathways. The theory is applied to a generic analysis of the phosphate export in Morsa watershed due to the load from 620 individual households with a local wastewater treatment. Essential factors for the phosphate export is filtering of the water in stream-bed sediments through a distribution of hyporheic flow paths of various lengths. This generic study indicates that a significant portion of phosphate is retained in the hyporheic zones for a long time. The 90% recovery time following a hypothetical remediation action in the households is expected to be in the order of one decade.

abstractsIn this paper variational formulations for surface gravitational waves in inviscid incompressible fluids are investigated. The formulations are introduced with the help of the principle of virtual work. The starting point are equations of motion multiplied by a field of virtual displacements and integrated over the region occupied by the fluid. In derivations of the virtual work equation careful attention is paid to mutual relations between Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions. The integration of the equation with respect to time leads to the expression for the Lagrangian function and then the Hamilton's principle. The case of a potential flow and spatial description provides a generalisation of the Lagrangian given by Luke (1967).

abstractsA three-dimensional primitive equation hydrodynamic model was used to investigate the impacts from freshwater introduction into a shallow brackish lake. The proposed effort is an attempt to reduce seasonal salinity intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico through tidal passes and navigation canals during periods of low tributary flows. The model is a modification of the Princeton Ocean Model.

abstractsFrom the point of view of enterprises dealing with WDS operation and maintenance, parameter assessment of reliability of WDS functioning is one of the basics for the assessment of the quality of water-supply services afforded by enterprises. To make reliability assessment possible, a two-state model of WDS reliability has been proposed. The basic parameter of this model is the probability of satisfactory performance of the system as a function of its reliability. Other, no less important parameters characterizing the model are probability of part fault state, intensity of occurrence of part fault states, average time of satisfactory performance state and average time of part fault state of the system. The model has been used to estimate the function of a definite WDS reliability on the basis of operational research of reliability during 3years of its functioning.
