abstractsA brief review of the general characteristics of earthquakes is presented. The impact of several earthquakes on structures and foundations have been analysed in detail. Special attention has been given to the evaluation of subsoil behaviour including settlements, liquefaction, and movements resulting in landslides. Design methods to minimize the impact of earthquakes on structures and their foundations are presented.

abstractsThe tests for the surface foundation on sand under the cyclic loading were conducted in a container 1.5 m in diameter. A rigid foundation 0.5 m in diameter was prepared by poring a concrete on it. Stresses were measured under the foundation base and soil. Results presented enable the estimation of reliability of the cells used and difficulties in verification of the numerical model by the model tests.

abstractsThe coefficients qualifying the influence of lateral zones on the values of passive pressure are presented. The results of the verification analyses for these semi-empirical solution are included. The history of limit state development in three dimensional conditions, static and kinematic criteria and accuracy of the proposed method were checked.

abstractsThe method proposed in this paper is based on the slope stability analysis and the application of an elastic and limit plasticity approach to the problem of reinforced earth structures. This method enables us calculate the parameters and assume the distribution of the reinforcement in the soil nailing slopes, excavations and retaining walls.

abstractsThe paper presents evaluation of strength parameters of subsoil composed of water-glacial sands and varved clays using the static penetration method. Harder-Bloh's method was used to interpret the penetration curve. The paper contains: evaluation of the undrained shear strength, the constrained modulus and the coefficient of clay consolidation.

abstractsThe paper presents some remarks concerning slope stability analysis of tailings dams. Taking as an example a copper mine tailings dam a comprehensive method of shear strength analysis using in sit and laboratory tests was discussed. Some results of in situ tests including CPT and DMT sounding were presented together with qualitative estimation of liquefaction appearance.

abstractsExpansive clayey or silty soils are not recommended for pavement or pavement's subgrade. The stabilisation of these soils obtained by adding Iime improves their strength. This study presents the optimal criteria for choosing conditions in using expansive soils stabilized with lime and water in the pavement design.

abstractsFailures of sheet-pile walls and micropiles most often encountered in engineering practice are presented. Errors commonly made during design and construction have been evaluated, reviewed and described using typical examples. It was found that anchorage failure due to poor construction was the most common cause of failure of sheet-pile walls.
