abstractsConstitutive relations for sea ice are reviewed in the paper. Both the continuum (ductile) and fracture (brittle) ranges of ice behaviour are considered. Microscopic properties and mechanisms occurring at the ice grain level are discussed in the context of the types of macroscopic deformation observed in laboratory tests. A group of relatively simple viscoelastic models of the Burgers type for the ductile behaviour of isotropic ice is presented, followed by an account of more general and complex, three-dimensional models capable of describing the rheology of transversely isotropic or orthotropically anisotropic fabric of columnar ice. The tensile and compressive brittle fracture of ice due to the formation and propagation of cracks in the material is next discussed, and relations for determining failure strength of ice and relevant constitutive theories are provided.
